I plod slowly on my majestic legs. My hoofs are glimmering from the stream I just walked through. My red-brown coat seems like it would stick out, but in truth it blends nicely with the heather and other plants. My proud skull lowers and I start to graze on the tiny plants that fought up now that winter is done. I look very relaxed, but my ears flick around and show how alert I am.
I am Ranoch. Prince of a dead herd. Kinslayer. Monster in all but looks. The memory of what happened to me that night comes back. I once again stand over the bleeding body of my Sire and Dam. My Sire has one of my beztines sticking out of his chest. I should have waited for the velvet to fall off my antlers. They are soft, too soft to fight with.
I am once again in the present and have noticed that everything is quiet. No birds sing. no rabbits pound across the springy ground on their powerful legs. I am now on high alert as my cold brown eyes dart around. There is a predator around. My wet nose expands as a multitude of scents rush in to my lungs. I can smell him. The predator that deer fear. Wolf. There is a snap behind me and I whirl to face my opponent. My gave takes in the shaggy coat and prominent ribs. No others. Easy.
It leaps for my delicate throat and my antlers swing down to meet it. This thing must be mad to try and leap straight in to my antlers. It still struggles forward. Its body makes a sick sound as it impales itself on my antlers. My eyes watch its starving ones. There is the feverish light of madness in there. "Rest in peace, brother. Your suffering is at an end," I whisper to it. Then my antlers jerk forward and pierce the heart. They slide out as I back away and blood starts to leek out of the body. It also drips down and starts too pool on my head. I turn then to walk away. The symphony of the prey animals starts up again like nothing happened. My watchful eyes drink in the land. Food, water, protected. This could hold a herd. Maybe it could be my herd.
My decision is made as I rocket up the side of the valley and stand on the highest point. My loud call echos throughout the valley "I, Ranoch, claim this land to be mine until I am no longer able to defend it properly." I rear up then and stomp my feet when I descend back to Earth.
